For high earners (gross above €80k/year), the highest take-home pay is found in Switzerland (low-tax cantons), Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Denmark and Iceland. Among EU-only countries, Luxembourg and Ireland top the ranking. The lowest effective tax burden on average salaries is in Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Czechia and Estonia.

How the calculation works
For each country the engine: (1) starts from the gross salary, (2) deducts employee social security contributions with the correct ceiling, (3) applies the federal/national income tax brackets, (4) adds any regional, communal or solidarity surcharges, (5) applies tax credits and family-quotient rules, (6) returns net pay. Employer-side contributions are computed separately to show total employment cost.
